March Photo

What can you tell us about this picture? Who are these people? What were they doing? When was it taken? What significance to our Community Center does the photo represent? Is this you?
We invite you to contact us with the details and we’ll write 100 words (or maybe 10,000) in our featured corner article, Talk Story. Contact us via email with the subject "Talk Story" and the date of the article.

Photo #1 - VJCC Clean-Up |
From information offered by Eric Inouye:
The men in the photograph are, from left to right, Tad Izuhara, Shig Miya, Rikio Ishikawa, Tokuji Matsuda and Kazumi Ota. They are taking part in what is now known as the VJCC Spring Clean-up. Before it became a Center-wide project, the members of the Marina Gardeners’ Association used to make up almost the entire work force to keep the VJCC looking good and in good working order. They provided the backbone for the VJCC and continue, still, to teach us about community within the Center. If anyone can provide us with some information about the concrete footing outside the gym where Tokuji Matsuda and Kazumi Ota are standing, I’m told that the information can lead us to pinpointing the year in which Photo #1 may have been taken! |
February's Photo
“Somebody called me the other day and said my picture was in the “Talk Story” page of the current VJCC newspaper. I hadn’t seen it yet….surprise, it’s me! I was tickled. I’ve never seen this picture before nor do I remember who took it. But I do know it was during the Center’s Summer Festival because I see Joe Belli and Jun Oyama making the udon dashi and Mrs. Shigeko Fujihiro unwrapping the bags of petite pastries from Angel Maid Bakery to feed the workers. I don’t know who the other two ladies are; probably from Line Dance Class or VYC.” - Elinor Suzuki |
Photo #2 - 1998 VJCC Summer Festival |
“The event is the serving of udon at the Annual VJCC Carnival (now called Festival). The year, approximately 1993 – 96; the people - Elinor Suzuki on left, Mrs. Fujihiro on right - can't identify the two ladies in the middle - the guy with the straw hat in the rear is Joe Belli, and the hardworking guy with the VYC t-shirt is me. Am I close or am I way off?” - Jun Oyama
Well, Jun, you’re very, very close! I’m going to add my two cents regarding the year and that VYC t-shirt Jun is wearing. I believe those were the 1998-1999 VYC t-shirts. That was the first year I served as a team parent rep. and I remember passing out those t-shirts!
Now, I know someone out there knows who the two, so far, unidentified ladies are!
