March Photo

The Talk Story email inbox is empty. That means everyone has another month to ponder on the March photo. Well… on all of the subjects in the photo, except one.
Since the VJCC Community News began running the Talk Story feature, I have looked through a lot of photographs. Certain faces pop up often through various periods of time. As a result, some people have become very familiar to me even though I may never have met them. Some of the gentlemen in the March photo are like that for me, but one definitely is not. That handsome fellow on the far right with the goatee – very “cool” in those days – is Jim Mayeda. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know Mr. Mayeda, as I most certainly would have referred to him in 1971. I can’t say that I remember the goatee, though. When this photo first came to my attention, I asked Jim’s neighbor, my Auntie Yayeko Nishina, if she remembered the goatee, and she said, “Oh, yes.” I wish I had paid better attention in 1971, but at least the goatee has been immortalized in Talk Story! :-)
Have you ever thought about earning community service hours by helping to print the VJCC Community News? Besides earning community service hours, you might have some fun. Plus, Kelvin Uyeda, the person in charge of printing out the front page articles and the recurring columns, will teach you everything that you need to know about using the computer and the printer.
It is always nice to see people volunteering their time to help the Center. During the last few months some wonderful young volunteers, Jessica Aceret, Ryan Sharp and Greg Yamaguchi, have helped print the newsletter. For last month’s newsletter, the volunteers worked hard by printing out eight single-sided pages, which included the main article, the President’s message, Senior Moments, Talk Story and some of the Center’s flyers. The volunteers did a nice job of selecting photos and working on the layouts for the Bingo Night flyer, the Summer Internship announcement and the Golf Tournament flyer.
While the pages were being printed, Jessica, Ryan and Greg spent their time in the RAP Lounge. One of the volunteers brought their Wii and they started to challenge one another in various games. According to Gail Sharp, who also helped with the printing, Jessica won all of the Wii Sports games.
Jessica, Ryan and Greg, thank you very much for volunteering your time. Hopefully, the volunteers were able to have some fun and learn something new. Luckily for Kelvin, these volunteers were able to help him make the printing deadline. Without them, Kelvin might have been a little pressed for time.
