Talk Story

By Gail Sharp

November Photo

Talk Story Photo for November

What can you tell us about this picture? Who are these people? What were they doing? When was it taken? What significance to our Community Center does the photo represent? Are any of these attractive ladies you, your mother, aunt, sister or friend?

The positive response to October’s vintage photo was overwhelming. Never one to tamper with a formula that works, I’m happy to borrow another anniversary booklet photo for November.

Send email to talkstory@vjcc.com.

“That's me, Craig Tomita, third from the left in the back row. This photo was taken in Dec. of 1971 during Japanese School. This is the 6th grade class.

Front row: Leonard Ikeda, Arthur Shoji, Takeo Ozaki, (Mr. Kazuo) Sekino Sensei, Imogene Ota, Lorraine Wakino, and Mae Yamanishi.

Back row: Bobby Sumiyoshi, Yutaka Koyama, Craig Tomita, Glenn Fujihiro, Ken Shimoyama, Miwako Nakao and Diane Tanaka.

Back then, we went by our Japanese middle names. Seeing the photo brought back memories of the annual events: Undo-kai competition, Ohanashikai and the Christmas program. I also recall the morning "radio taiso" before school started, and how we had to scrub the tables, chairs and floors at the end of each day's lessons. I also remember how the yard (which was unpaved back then) became this fantastic sea of mud after it rained - great fun when you're that age!”  - Craig Tomita

“Hello! I am responding to the picture that was in the community news. The Teacher's name is Mr. Sekino, I think he taught 5th grade. I am the girl who is sitting next to him; my name is Imogene (Ota) Imada. The next two girls are Lorraine Wakino and Mae Yamanishi. In the 2nd row of girls are Denise Nakao and Diane Tanaka. The guy standing in the 2nd row next to Denise is Dr. Jeff Shimoyama. The boy sitting in the first row from the left is Leonard Ikeda. I believe it was around 1969 or 1970. It was nice seeing that picture.” - Imogene Imada

September Photo 2

“I think my Dad (Dale Ito) is in the September picture from the VJCC newsletter! From 1993? I have no idea the year or even the event, but the smile is unmistakable! As you know, he practically lived at the VJCC. I never minded "sharing" him with the community because this place was like home to me as well! There are so many giving volunteers at the VJCC, past and present, my Dad being just one of them!” - Cheryl Kitahata

Thank you to Yaeko Yamamoto and Vickie Morimoto who called and emailed in some names for the September photos.  In addition to Dale holding up a winning Bingo card, Eric Inouye is identified as the 1993 Bingo Night volunteer seated second from the left in September Photo 1.
