Karate is commonly interpreted to mean "empty hand." This comes from the literal interpretation of the characters used to write Karate in Japanese.

Karate in practice, can be and is a competitive sport, a means of exercise, an effective means of self defense, and finally and most importantly, a traditional Japanese martial art. It is an activity which can greatly benefit the health and well being of its participants. It can be enjoyed by people of both sexes and all ages.

An insight into the ultimate goals of the art of Karate may be attained by examining the dojo kun. It is an ISKF standard to have the dojo kun prominently displayed at the forefront of the practice area and to recite them at the end of every training session. The dojo kun are:

SEEK PERFECTION OF CHARACTER

BE FAITHFUL

ENDEAVOR

RESPECT OTHERS
REFRAIN FROM VIOLENT BEHAVIOR

These dojo kun are the basic principles developed by Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern Karate. They are meant to establish Karate as a way of life for its participants. They set a standard of ethics and moral behavior for all participants in Karate.
