President's Message

Jack Kurihara

Message for April 2008

Gail Sharp, one of our new VJCC Board members, recently volunteered to serve as the chairperson for the Communication Committee, which is responsible for general media-related activities.  You probably recognize Gail’s name from the many

articles she pens for the newsletter, including the Visions and Talk Story columns.  For the past two years she has been serving as the VJCC’s Corresponding Secretary and as the Center’s representative to the Del Rey Homeowners’ Association.  Her volunteerism started as a VYC parent rep (on behalf of her sons, Steven and Ryan) and has continued to grow.  Keep it up, Gail!!

The Community Center is soliciting candidates for a summer internship program, sponsored by the Venice-Culver JACL. Applicants must be at least eighteen years old, and be available between June 16 and September 19. The successful candidate will undertake research into the VJCC’s history, conduct one-on-one interviews, write articles, and attend certain VJCC or Venice-Culver JACL meetings.  If you know anyone interested in applying, more detailed information and the application can be downloaded from the VJCC website (http://www.vjcc.com). The deadline for applications is May 31, 2008.

Finally, our Spring Bingo Night fundraiser is on Saturday, April 26. The Venice Youth Council will be selling bento so that you can enjoy a good meal while playing bingo. I hope to see you there.

Be Aware and Stay Safe

During recent weeks, Westside communities have been hit by a new crime of opportunity.  Individuals and groups have been wandering through

neighborhoods and knocking on doors.  They do not want to find you at home.  In fact, they are hoping that you aren’t at home and that you have left a back door or ground floor window unsecured.  Once they determine that no one is home and find that open window or unlocked door, they’re in the house to rummage through your personal belongings and steal your valuables.

It doesn’t matter whether you are visiting a neighbor, gardening in the yard, working in the garage or sitting in the house.  It is a good idea to always secure exterior doors and windows so that they cannot be opened or removed for someone to gain access to your home.

If you see groups or individuals acting suspiciously in your neighborhood, call 911 to report them.  Protect your neighbors and yourself.

This crime awareness and safety information was reported at the September Executive Council meeting by our VJCC representatives to the LAPD Pacific Division Advisory Meeting, Irene Matsumura, and the Del Rey Homeowners and Neighbors Association (DRH&NA), Gail Sharp. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend these meetings. The LAPD Pacific Div. meeting takes place on the second Wednesday of the month at Pacific Division Station. The DRH&NA board meeting takes place on the first Monday of the month right here at the VJCC.
