2002 JACL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER – ERIC TAMURA
Venice Culver JACL congratulates Eric Tamura winner of a $1000 National JACL Scholarship – South Park Japanese Community Scholarship. Eric is the son of Randy and Mari Tamura, members of the Venice Culver JACL. Eric received one of many scholarships awarded and administered by the National JACL. The South Park Japanese Community Scholarship was established in 1920 by a group of Issei and Nisei farmers in South Park, a rural area outside of Seattle, Washington. Prior to World War II, South Park was a thriving vegetable farming area, somewhat similar to the area surrounding the Venice Japanese Community Center before World War II.

Eric, who is a freshman at Brown University, wrote in his essay, “The Japanese American Citizens League holds the key in providing a backdrop for a religiously and geographically diverse youth organization suited for Japanese Americans…”. Congratulations to Eric Tamura.

The national JACL scholarship and awards program began in 1946. Now in its 56th year, the program currently offers 30 annual scholarships totaling over $60,000. The scholarship program awards students at all levels of study in amounts ranging from $1000 to $5000. JACL membership is required to be considered. Students who are not members of JACL may apply for membership at the time they submit their application.

The 2003 JACL Scholarship Committee is now accepting applications. Interested students are encouraged to obtain eligibility information and an application from the JACL website at: www.jacl.org/scholarships.html. The following are deadlines for submitting applications: Entering Freshman – postmarked March 1, 2003 (submit application to Venice Culver JACL). All other applicants – postmark April 1, 2003 (submit to JACL scholarship committee). For additional information, please contact the Venice Culver JACL: JACLSAK@AOL.COM.
